Pole Creek Action Memorandum from the Forest Service calling for action under CERCLA to fix contamination coming from the Pole Creek Overburden Disposal Area at Smoky Canyon. This Oct 2, 2006 memo summarizes data in the Site Investigation report of 2005 that found selenium in amounts that exceed safe water standards in springs and streams in the area. The selenium contamination poses a threat to wildlife and streams, but according to Idaho Department of Health, not to area residents. Memo outlines three actions by JR Simplot Company to alleviate the contamination. First, a pipeline to divert stream water around and over the Overburden Disposal area. Second, a inflitration gallery to collect water. Lastly, a ditch on the north side of the disposal area to prevent water running on to the area. Estimated cost of the project was $3.5 million.
