Executive Summary provides a synopsis of the entire document. This Final Environmental Impact Statement looks at the options for continued operation at Smoky Canyon and the opening up of leases in Panels F & G that are slated to begin in 2007-2008. This FEIS focuses on the alternatives and environmental affects from proposed action that were examined in the previous Draft EIS and comments received from the public.

Chapter 1 describes the purpose of and need for the implementation of mining in Panels F & G of the Smoky Canyon Mine; roles of the BLM and USFS; public participation in the EIS process; and general Project history. Chapter-1 (PDF 150K)

Chapter 2 provides a historical perspective of phosphate mining in the Project Area; describes existing operations; presents the Proposed Action; presents and compares alternatives to the Proposed Action; lists potential mitigation actions to reduce or minimize impacts, and discusses the agency-preferred alternative.
